Susan Snook grew up in Saratoga and began piano lessons at age 8 and oboe at age 13. As an oboist she performed with bands, orchestras, and choral groups throughout the Bay Area. As a pianist she appeared as soloist with the Campbell High School Orchestra, San Jose Junior Symphony, and West Valley Orchestra. After Graduating from Campbell High School, she attended San Jose State University for two years to continue studying with her piano teacher, William Erlendson. The next phase of her education was at Stanford University, when she studied piano with Adolph Baller, Yehudi Menuhin's accompanist. She received a B.A. with (academic) distinction and honors in music, an M.A. in Performance Practice, and a Ph.D. in Musicology. Cambridge University Press published a revised version of her dissertation. ("After they let me in, they couldn't get rid of me. Some of my favorite memories are of singing in and accompanying the Stanford Choral groups, including singing with the San Francisco Symphony.") While finishing her degrees, Susan taught part-time at Santa Clara University and Caņada College. After finishing her Ph.D. she accepted a job as Assistant Professor of Musicology and Oboe at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS. Singing in the Presbyterian Church Choir there, she met David Luther, an Assistant Professor of Business Management at "Ole Miss" who suggested they both change their names to Snook-Luther. They have been actively making music together for the Lord ever since. After a year in Corvallis, Oregon, they lived in Laramie, Wyoming for 12 years, where David was a tenured professor at the University of Wyoming, while Susan taught part-time at the University, built up a private piano studio and served as church choir director and Stephen Minister. In 1999 they moved (back) to California, where they live in Susan's childhood home with her mother, Pauline Snook. |
