Senior Pastor

The Reverend Mark J. Brady was unanimously voted in by Church members on Sunday, June 20, 2004, as our new Pastor. Mark has an excellent reputation in building churches and not only increasing church membership, but increasing enrollment in Sunday Schools as well. Mark has the special gifts, training, and experience in ministry, which are just what Union Church needs at this time. The Brady family consists of Mark, his wife Diana and their sons, Nate, Ethan and Austin. Diana is also an ordained United Methodist minister, a nurse, and a counselor. Mark enjoys golf, kayaking, skiing, hockey, basketball and family outings to the ocean.

Memberships: An ordained United Methodist Minister. Rev. Mark Brady holds a BA in Humanities/Political Science from U of Minnesota, a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and has completed doctoral course work at the Claremont School of Theology.

Music Director
 
Dr. Ross Hoksbergen is the director of the music ministries at Union Church, which include the Adult Choir, Praise Band, Women’s Chorus, and Children’s chorus, Joyful Noise. He coordinates the music for weekly services and special events, including community benefit concerts, Christmas and Easter Cantatas, and concerts by guest musicians.
 
Ross began his collegiate studies at Western Michigan University, where he won a full tuition scholarship to perform as a member of the Russell Brown Brass Quintet. He then completed a M.M. from the University of South Florida, where he was a graduate teaching assistant. He was the interim choir director at First Reformed Church of Tampa, Florida and regular guest for many churches as a solo trumpet player. At USF, Ross was a finalist for the National Trumpet Competition, performing Tartini’s Concerto in D on piccolo trumpet. In the summer of 2009 Ross toured Italy and France with the University of South Florida Jazz Band. Ross then joined London’s Carl Rosa Opera, as the principal trumpet while they toured the United States. He also toured New York and California with the Axiom Brass Quintet, performing sacred works, classical transcriptions, and original works for brass quintet.
 
Dr. Hoksbergen continued his studies at Michigan State University, where he completed the D.M.A. degree in Music Performance. Ross was a member of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and frequent guest of the Grand Rapids Symphony. He was a member of the faculty brass ensemble, the Beaumont Brass Quintet. He played in the MSU Trumpet Ensemble, who performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Sydney, Australia. His most recent performances have come with the Messiah Brass Quintet, performing sacred works for brass quintet for churches and venues across the Bay Area.
 
Ross enjoys his time teaching music lessons, as co-director of Cupertino Music Academy. He strives to provide high level music instruction to students of all ages, as an instructor of voice, piano, trumpet, trombone, drums, and beginner guitar. Many of the students and teachers from Cupertino Music Academy perform regularly in church and across the bay area.

Pianist/ Organist

Dr. Rumyana Yanakieva started playing piano at the age of six. After graduating with honors from the National Academy of Music in Sofia (Bulgaria), she pursued a Master’s in Music under a full assistantship from University of South Florida. She then began work on a Doctoral Degree (D.M.A.) in Music Performance from Michigan State University in 2008. Rumyana was a scholarship winning pianist and a full graduate assistant during her time at Michigan State University. She collaborated with numerous undergraduate and graduate students, performing in over 50 recitals. She was selected in 2013 to work as a collaborative pianists at the International Trumpet Guild Seminar, held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Rumyana often appears as a part of the R and R Piano and Trumpet Duo, with her husband Ross. Together, they perform chamber music for trumpet and piano, as well as transcriptions and their own arrangements of popular melodies. Currently, she is co-founder of Union Music Academy in Cupertino, California, specializing in high level private music lessons and the accompanist and organist and Union Church of Cupertino. Yanakieva has more than twelve years of teaching experience. As a founder and director of Union Music Academy, Rumyana is dedicated to provide a high-level education for everyone who is interested to learn more about music. Her efforts are focused on creating a nurturing and inspiring environment where the students can experience the art of piano playing.

mindyMindy Dickens

Resident Musician/Joyful Noise Director/Cantor

Originally from New York, Mindy Dickens has sung at Carnegie Hall with the New York Oratorio Society and as soloist for the UN Choir. She graduated with High Honors from Binghamton University in New York, where she studied music theory and conducting as well as voice and violin performance. She has over twenty years of experience singing in and directing church and school choirs, performing in and directing musical theatre productions, as well as teaching voice and violin to both children and adults. Her studio has two recitals each year, in addition to performing at Christmas in the Park in downtown San Jose and at assisted living facilities throughout the year. Her focus is helping students develop a healthy technique – which also helps improve range, tone, and musicianship, while nurturing the joy in playing music and having fun along the way.
